Chlorine Free Tampons

All of a sudden, women are paying attention to organic tampons, even though the products have been around for years. We (ourselves included) have always used the same off-the-shelf feminine hygiene products without ever really questioning what we were putting into our bodies. Chances are, we use the same tampons our moms used. We wouldn’t wear the same jeans our moms wear, why would we use the same tampons?

Now, thanks to the work of agencies like Womens Voices for the Earth and others, women are demanding to know the ingredients in the products that they put in their most private of private parts, and some of the answers might surprise you.

Here are a couple of the sneaky little ingredients you might not be super excited about putting inside your body:

  • Pesticides: Conventional tampons contain pesticides. Close to 30% of the world’s pesticide is used on cotton crops, and over $2 billion is spent per year on this process. Sounds great, love a good pesticide.
  • Chemicals: According to Dr. Joseph Mercola via the Huffington Post, “Any feminine hygiene products that contain odor neutralizers and artificial fragrances are virtually a chemical soup, laced with artificial colors, polyester, adhesives, polyethylene (PET), polypropylene and propylene glycol (PEG), contaminants linked to hormone disruption, cancer, birth defects, dryness and infertility.”
  • GMOs: The logic behind this is that since approximately 94% of cotton produced in the United States is genetically modified, there is a good chance that you could be ingesting GMOs through your tampons. And get this, it might actually be WORSE than eating GMO food because it’s being absorbed way quicker through the extremely thin skin surrounding your vagina.
  • Chlorine Bleach: In order to get an ultra white look to cotton, many manufacturers use a bleaching process that involves Chlorine Bleach, which also produces a byproduct called…(insert drumroll here)…Dioxin!…and other “Disinfection By Products”.

The World Health Organization explains that, Dioxins are, “are environmental pollutants. They belong to the so-called “dirty dozen” – a group of dangerous chemicals known as persistent organic pollutants (POPs). Dioxins are of concern because of their highly toxic potential. Experiments have shown they affect a number of organs and systems. Once dioxins enter the body, they last a long time because of their chemical stability and their ability to be absorbed by fat tissue, where they are then stored in the body. Their half-life in the body is estimated to be 7 to 11 years.”

But wait! There’s more. (Stay tuned for Sneaky Little Nasties Vol. 2!)

The good news is that there are alternatives. Kali happens to be one of them. Choosing organic tampons means that you are choosing a product free from Chlorine Bleach, Synthetics, Chemicals, and any ingredients commonly referred to as the “Dirty Dozen.”

We can’t live in fear that everything is going to kill us, but we can make better choices for our body, and our planet.
