Can Women Get Pregnant On Their Period?

Just because you’re on your period doesn’t mean you can’t get pregnant, read on to learn more!

We’ve been trained to believe that you have to be in the middle of your cycle to get pregnant. Many women have asked the question whether or not you can get pregnant by having unprotected sex while you are on your period. The answer is not as straightforward as you may think, and you shouldn’t assume that getting pregnant on your period is impossible. (That’s just a myth.)

More often than not, if you have sex during your period you will not get pregnant, since you are several days away from ovulating, however that applies to women with a regular 28-30-day cycle. With a regular cycle it is much easier to identify when you are ovulating, and Period Trackers are a great way to help with this also.

If you have a shorter menstrual cycle, and are getting your period every 21-14 days, the possibility for you to get pregnant during your period does exist. This is due to the fact that you are ovulating sooner after your period. Additionally, sperm can live inside your body for up to 5 days, so just because you didn’t have sex on the day you were ovulating, doesn’t mean you can’t get pregnant.

Additionally, some women experience breakthrough bleeding or spotting throughout their cycle, so it could be difficult to establish when your ovulation will occur. Women that are trying to avoid becoming pregnant should be careful anytime they have unprotected sex, whether it’s during their period or not.

According to Parents.com, if you did have sex during your period and think you may be pregnant, look for symptoms that include mild cramping, breast tenderness, moodiness, and implantation spotting, which is a fairly common cause of bleeding once the egg has been fertilized.

The best way to avoid pregnancy at any stage of your menstrual cycle is to use contraception. If you are having unprotected sex, using the pull and pray method, or letting your partner ejaculate inside of you (yes, even precum), it is possible to get pregnant at pretty much anytime in your cycle. Better safe, than pregnant (unless you’re trying to get pregnant—in which case, get to getting’ busy!).
